History and Teams America’s Pastime The game of baseball has been referred to as “America’s Pastime” since the first time the phrase was uttered by a writer at The New York Mercury newspaper in 1852. The growth of the sport in the United States started gaining a lot of steam in the Civil War as soldiers would play the game to pass the time. The first group of rules for the game as we know it today came in 1846 by a group of people in New York who played the game regularly and the first professional team, the Cincinnati Red Stockings emerged in 1869. But the two biggest developments in recent years have been the absurd rise in players’ salaries and the pace of the game. Right now, salaries are usually at least seven figures, with some players making eight figures per year, including New York Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez’s $33 million per year. Baseball has also struggled to find ways to make the games go any faster, as games are now averaging at least three hours long.
